History of OPSF50|50
The history of OPSF5050 from the stories of Bob Siscoe:
Jeff Tincher started the race in 1993 as a 50 mile race starting at rattlesnake campground. The course changed several times in the first five or six years including moving the race to horse campground in 1996 because of the poor conditions of Surber road. The 50k and 14 mile races were added some time in the first ten years, but it’s unclear when this happened exactly. In 2002, Norm Carlson became race director, and he directed the event until health problems prevented his involvement around 2007 or 2008. David Glass took over race director duties through 2012. David stepped away from the race director duties, and unfortunately, in 2013 the race was not run.
Knowing the long history of the race, Bob Siscoe and Terry Fletcher revived the race in 2014. Terry directed the race while leading Indiana Trail Running and revamped the course along with moving the race to the spring from the fall of the year. In 2017, Indiana Trail Running Association became the official owner and director of the race. The race is now a primary fund raiser for the club.
It is suspected that OPSF50|50 is the oldest ultra in the state of Indiana.
